Algeria years: birth to The Stranger
Albert Camus was born in Mondovi, Algeria on 7th November 1913, the second son of Lucien and Catherine Camus. His father worked as a cellarman and his mother was a cleaning woman. Albert lived with his father for just eight months, until the outbreak of World War I.
Lucien was called up and was among the first to be wounded in the Battle of Marne. He died of his wounds on October 11th 1914.
Camus spent his childhood years living in a small three-bedroom apartment, on the Rue de Lyon in the working class suburb of Belcourt in Algiers.
